Seymour Schulich Teaching Excellence Awards
What are the Seymour Schulich Teaching Excellence Awards?
- Annual awards in recognition of outstanding teaching and learning
- Presented at the Graduate Business Council (GBC) and Undergraduate Business Council (UBC) Formal at the end of the Winter Term each year
- $15,000 awarded to the first place winner and $10,000 to the second place winner
- Awards are separate for masters and undergraduate students
Why should I participate?
- Recognize those instructors who have made the most positive difference in your Schulich education
- Inspire other instructors to strive for the same outstanding contribution in the future
Why were the awards redesigned?
Stakeholder feedback revealed a need for:
- Increased student participation
- A fairer selection process for faculty
- User-friendly, convenient access for students
How are award winners selected?
- Determined by students through an on-line platform, completed in-class in week 5 or 6 (6 week courses) or in week 11 or 12 (12 week courses), i.e., Schulich TEA on-line portal is open for two weeks
- Form is comprised of two questions that can be accessed by visiting www.schulich.yorku.ca/tea
- Awards are solely determined by your student ratings.
- Together the responses of these two questions plus the participation rate for the course section generate the Schulich TEA Score, used to determine the Schulich TEA Top Ten with the top two becoming the Schulich TEA winners for the year.
- The unit of evaluation for the Schulich TEA will be one course section - for example, ACTG 1000 3.00, Section A
- Only course sections with 15 or more students are eligible for the award
What type of devices can we (students) use to complete the Schulich TEA on-line Portal?
- The Schulich TEA on-line portal is fully functional in all internet browsers on laptop devices.
- In addition, the portal has been tested and is compatible on portable devices (mobile phones and tablets) through internet browser access, meaning students should access the portal at www.schulich.yorku.ca/tea via their portable device internet browser and complete their rankings
- A mobile application will be developed in the future
What are the two questions that are the basis of the Schulich TEA Score?
- In your personal opinion, based on your experience in this course, do you believe this instructor should receive the Seymour Schulich Teaching Excellence Award? (1 to 7 level of agreement scale)
- Ethics Clearance – No one attempted to bias my response to the question above. (False/True)
How is Teaching Excellence defined for the purposes of this award?
Seymour Schulich’s vision for these awards is that the winners demonstrate excellence in:
- Knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, the subject matter
- Exceptional teaching strategies and communication skills
- Positive student learning experiences
- Teaching innovation
- Responsiveness to student needs and concerns
- Question 1 – asks students to rate your instructor based on Seymour Schulich’s vision
What should I do if my instructor does not provide time in the beginning of Week 5 or 6 (6 week courses) or Week 11 or 12 (12 week courses) for this process?
You should contact UBC Academics Director at [email protected] right away to pursue the issue. Please include course, section and the instructor’s name
Where are the Schulich TEA Top Ten and Winners recognized?

- All students should submit their personal rating of their specific instructors, based on their own experience and based on their own judgment
- Self-promotion by an instructor is not permitted
- Promotion of a specific instructor by a student is not permitted
